New agreement expands representation of 1science’s solution to academic libraries in their uptake of open access

1science, announces the appointment of WorldWide Information Services as its sales agent in South Africa and neighboring countries. WWIS will be responsible for the sales of 1science’s integrated solution which supports academic libraries in their uptake of open access, optimizes their subscriptions management, and increases the visibility of their universities’ scholarly production.

This new appointment was made to strengthen 1science’s presence in this new region and to handle all sales and inquiries. « We are pleased to expand our presence in South Africa and to partner with WWIS », says Eric Archambault, President and CEO, 1science. « Extending our products in the region is aligned with our mission to facilitate the flow of knowledge the world over. WWIS is well positioned to support us, as a result of their strong network in and knowledge of the local market. They will enable us to provide the highest level of service to our clients in this region and to respond quickly to their needs. »

About WWIS
WorldWide Information Services (WWIS) was established in 2006 when the management team at the time bought a local subscription agent, Mast Publications from the listed AdvTech Group. The name was selected to better reflect the strategic direction of the company and its mission and vision to enhance commitment in providing world-class subscription management solutions.

Today the company is owned by five Directors and is a leading subscription agent with a client base, which currently includes 90% of South African academic institutions. It is unashamedly proud of its South African origins and ownership and strives to maintain a level of independence, which gives it the freedom to decide on its own destiny, in partnership with a growing base of clients who are loyal to its strong values.

Key milestone for solution to relieve budgets and save time in research communication

Montreal, May 10, 2017-1science enables university and research libraries to radically reduce the time and money spent on accessing and distributing peer-reviewed articles in all fields of research, in all languages, and from all over the world. On four continents, libraries now use 1science products, leveraging 1science’s database of 25 million records to better manage their journal subscriptions, cost-effectively repair, rebuild and expand their journal collections, and quickly fill their repositories.

Libraries worldwide experience growing financial pressures while also being expected to support world class research. Researchers are increasingly short of time, being solicited to do free work everywhere, from peer reviews to helping fill repositories. « There are many solutions to access scholarly literature, but they are either expensive or labor intensive, » states Eric Archambault, 1science’s CEO. « We designed cost-effective solutions to relieve library budgets and to free researchers from time-consuming chores. »

1science’s product line starts with oaFigr, which informs research offices and scholcomm on the current state of their open access efforts compared to a global benchmark. oaFigr is also the best tool available to facilitate libraries’ and documentation centers’ transition to open access, helping librarians calculate offsets for gold and hybrid article processing charges and providing evidence on how to best manage journal subscriptions to maximize value for researchers and students.

The second product, oaFindr is a gateway platform allowing researchers to instantaneously find and download large numbers of peer-reviewed articles and their associated bibliographic records. It provides convenient and flexible access to its growing client base, using the discovery systems and link resolvers offered by EBSCO, ProQuest/Ex Libris and OCLC. A companion product, oaFindr+, helps librarians fill their repositories without having to involve busy faculty and researchers.

1science’s most radical innovation is oaFoldr, the only self-populating and self-updating repository solution on the market. It can be used by research councils, funding organizations and universities that want to almost instantly reach the fill-rate of the most advanced repositories, without having to ask researchers and librarians to spend precious time repeating the work of others.

1science has put in place a global distribution network to service institutions worldwide. Pioneer clients include the École Polytechnique in Montreal, Caltech in California and ETH in Zurich, in addition to other prestigious institutions such as Stanford, McGill and the University of Calgary, and OA leaders such as Trinity University (Texas).

About 1science
1science’s mission is to reduce the time and money spent on knowledge acquisition and diffusion. 1science develops products combining powerful search and analytics capacities with the highest quality, curated scholarly and scientific information. 1science is headquartered in Montreal, Canada, and is affiliated with Science-Metrix, a professional services company specializing in bibliometrics and program evaluation.

Collaboration to provide academic libraries a wider content of open access scholarly articles

1science and EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) are pleased to announce their partnership to provide academic libraries access to a vast number of openly accessible scholarly articles when performing a search in EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS).

This is a natural partnership as both parties understand that academic institutions spend time and resources investing in discovery systems while aiming to increase their content, and provide to their users open access articles published in peer-reviewed journals. « We are pleased to be collaborating with EBSCO, a leading force in the discovery service market », says Dr. Eric Archambault, CEO, 1science. « Through this agreement, clients common to EBSCO and 1science conveniently gain access to more than 15.5 million open access, scholarly papers, all directly in EDS. This partnership is in line with our mission to facilitate the flow of knowledge. »

EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box. EBSCO Vice President of SaaS Strategy Tamir Borensztajn says that that this partnership will improve discoverability of content in open access journals. « EBSCO is one of the top providers of traffic to many open access journal websites and it provides high quality indexing for more than 11,000 open access journals. By partnering with 1science, researchers will be able to find and quickly access a wider content to the most relevant information available, within and beyond open access journals. »

1science offers an integrated solution that helps academic libraries increase the uptake of open access articles, the majority of which are from sources other than gold open access journals. With tools to bring open access to the fore, academic libraries can overcome their budget limitations with optimized subscriptions management and increase the visibility of their universities’ scholarly production. Now available through EDS, oaFindr allows library patrons to consistently find and directly download with one click, a rapidly growing number of green, hybrid and gold open access articles published in peer-reviewed scholarly journals.

Common 1science and EBSCO clients who will soon start benefitting from this partnership are The California Institute of Technology, The University of San Francisco and Trinity University.

New agreement expands representation of 1science’s solution for increased uptake of open access by universities and college libraries

1science today announces the appointment of Scientific Knowledge Services (SKS) as its sales agent in Central and Eastern Europe. Scientific Knowledge Services will be responsible for sales of 1science’s integrated solution that supports academic libraries in their uptake of open access, optimizes their subscriptions management, and increases the visibility of their universities’ scholarly production.

This agreement will expand 1science’s market visibility and presence in Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Serbia, Moldova, and Bosnia and Herzegovina; all sales and inquiries will be handled by SKS. The deal covers oaFindr, which has close to 20 million links to full-text scholarly papers and is the largest source of open access (OA) papers strictly published in peer-reviewed journals. Other products that will be distributed by SKS include oaFigr, which provides unique insight into scholarly journals subscription management, and oaFindr+, which largely accelerates the uploading of data into an institutional repository.

“We are pleased to partner up with SKS and support academic libraries in their transition to a more open access model,” says Eric Archambault, President and CEO, 1science. “We have great confidence in their strong networks and solid knowledge of the local markets, and also in their ability to provide the highest level of service to our clients in these regions and to quickly respond to their needs.”

SKS is a Swiss company with 20 years of experience in working with academic, public and research libraries, focusing on online electronic resources and solutions. “We are proud to be 1science’s local partner and believe that their innovative OA solutions will make a positive impact in our region,” says Tiberius Ignat, Managing Director of SKS. The company will be collaborating closely with Erik-Jan Van Kleef, Vice-President of Sales & Channel Management at 1science.

About SKS
SKS is a trusted partner to many well-known publishing houses and research solution providers, and is active in Central and Eastern Europe, with its head office in Zug, Switzerland. SKS’s main focus is to find the common ground where the interests of libraries, universities, research organizations and publishers meet, and propose winning solutions for all parties. The company’s efforts lie in understanding each market, by connecting and dedicating time to local librarians, academics, researchers and governmental bodies, and assisting publishers to better serve the specific information needs of each country.

Based on a study of more than 3 million papers, the study shows that traditional scholarly journals need green open access to retain their relevance

1science today announces the availability of the first results of a large-scale study on open access. The results reveal that freely available scholarly papers, otherwise known as open access papers, have a 50% greater citation advantage than papers published in traditional subscription-based journals.

This means that traditional scholarly journals that restrict access by enforcing subscription paywalls and embargoes will lose their relevance for researchers and governments. Researchers want their papers to be cited as it demonstrates the relevance of their research, and governments want papers to be as widely available as possible as a large part of scholarly and scientific research is financed through public funds.

The new research also shows that the widely held belief that open access papers have a greater impact due to them being available earlier than their commercially published versions is not consistent with the large-scale data collected by 1science. In fact, based on a tie series comprising more than 17.4 million papers published between 2000 and 2015, it is clear that open access still suffers from the effect of embargoes enforced by traditional publishers who maintain that they require that delay to keep the subscription model alive.

“This study pretty much closes the debate on the argument of whether or not open access papers have a greater impact,” says Eric Archambault, President and CEO, 1science. “By examining more than 3 million papers, from very diverse sources of citations and over a sufficiently long time, and considering close to 35 million citations, it is the most robust study on the subject to date.”

1science, whose mission is to facilitate the flow of knowledge, launched today an integrated solution for academic institutions to drastically increase the uptake of open access. Academic libraries can benefit from lower journal subscription costs, insight into subscriptions management and an increase in the visibility of their universities’ scholarly production.

« 1science is set to become a major disruptor in the scholarly, scientific and technical publishing industry, with our comprehensive suite of products for open access quickly gaining interest in academic libraries, » says Dr. Eric Archambault, President and CEO, 1science.

The 1science Library OA Solution includes three innovative first-to-market products: oaFindr, a seamless tool to retrieve all open access scholarly papers in every discipline; oaFindr+, an innovative virtual repository software; and oaFigr, independent reports providing OA statistics.

« We have developed an integrated solution for open access to enable academic institutions to analyze their journal subscriptions and provide them with a reliable, precise search and discovery tool to retrieve all open access articles. This solution will also help them comply with governmental open access mandates, and support them in rapidly increasing the diffusion of their institutions’ scholarly production in a manner that is much less labour-intensive, » says Archambault.

The company signed its first contract with the library of Polytechnique Montréal, a university reputed for its initiatives in innovation and technology. « Our partnership is a natural alliance, » says Mathieu Lampron, VP Product, 1science, a Polytechnique Montréal graduate. « The Polytechnique Montréal library and 1science share similar core values of creativity, collaboration and openness. Their involvement has helped us improve our products. »

« The Polytechnique library is proud to partner with 1science and benefit from its sense of innovation and understanding of the challenges of scholarly communications, » says Sylvain Meunier, Library Director, Polytechnique Montréal. « This is the beginning of a collaboration that will allow us to offer a wide range of resources to our students and professors, while reducing costs and contributing to an ever greater access to knowledge through open access. »

The 1science solution is globally available now to all academic institutions.

1science is officially launching in the US at the Charleston Library Conference on November 4, 2015.
