Work Description

The senior software developer will be working on our search engine for peer-reviewed science. On the front-end, it’s a single-page React/Redux application. On the back end, it’s Python services in front of Elasticsearch.

Where the developer will contribute the most will depend on their interests and the changing direction of our product. The developers code will be reviewed and they will review others’. The candidate will seek to understand user needs and help look at usage data to chart our direction. We’re a small group, so they’ll collaborate closely with the other senior developer on the product team, as well as our teams in data acquisition & data processing.

Tasks

• Assist in coding varying parts of the system using Python and Javascript (and HTML/CSS)
• Help design interactions and plan new features within our ecosystem
• Collaborate with developers and team in data acquisition to improve our product

Requirements

• A Computer Science or similar degree, or equivalent experience
• Solid knowledge of the modern JavaScript language and ecosystem
• You’ve worked on a sizeable JavaScript application, probably using an app framework (e.g. React, Angular, Vue, Ember, …)
• Significant experience writing Web backend code in a language other than JavaScript
• 3-5 years of software-development experience
• Strong communication skills, and the capacity to be productive in a self-driven environment
• Some knowledge of both French and English (you can work primarily in your stronger language, but you’ll have meetings where you need to understand both languages)
• Links to (or screenshots/descriptions of) things you’ve built on the Web

Montreal, June 1, 2017-1science extends warm congratulations to Dr. Ziyun Xu, who has recently been granted an Extraordinary PhD Award from the Council of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) in Tarragona, Spain. Dr. Xu received his PhD from URV in 2015. He was supervised during his doctoral studies by Science-Metrix and 1science CEO Dr. Éric Archambault, as he included a bibliometrics component in his Translation and Intercultural Studies dissertation.

URV’s Extraordinary PhD Awards are granted in recognition of doctoral theses of the highest quality. Dr. Xu was the only 2017 recipient of this Award from the URV Department of Humanities. A paper co-authored by Dr. Xu and Dr. Archambault can be accessed here.

Dr. Ziyun Xu obtained a BA in English Language and Literature at the Shanghai International Studies University, an MA in Conference Interpreting at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and a PhD cum laude in Translation and Intercultural Studies at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Spain).

Dr. Xu serves as an expert reviewer for Perspectives: Studies in Translatology, one of the premier journals in the field. He is a certified court interpreter for New York’s United Court System, and has provided extensive interpreting services for both Berkeley Law School and premier American law firms such as K&L Gates and Finnegan. He has worked for high-profile figures in the spheres of politics, business and academia, including three Nobel Prize laureates, US Secretaries of State, Bill Gates, and Tim Cook; he has also worked for leading international conferences and other prestigious bodies, including the White House, the US Congress, and Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley and Cornell Business Schools. He is currently Assistant Professor of Chinese Interpreting and Translation Studies at Wake Forest University.

Based on a study of more than 3 million papers, the study shows that traditional scholarly journals need green open access to retain their relevance

1science today announces the availability of the first results of a large-scale study on open access. The results reveal that freely available scholarly papers, otherwise known as open access papers, have a 50% greater citation advantage than papers published in traditional subscription-based journals.

This means that traditional scholarly journals that restrict access by enforcing subscription paywalls and embargoes will lose their relevance for researchers and governments. Researchers want their papers to be cited as it demonstrates the relevance of their research, and governments want papers to be as widely available as possible as a large part of scholarly and scientific research is financed through public funds.

The new research also shows that the widely held belief that open access papers have a greater impact due to them being available earlier than their commercially published versions is not consistent with the large-scale data collected by 1science. In fact, based on a tie series comprising more than 17.4 million papers published between 2000 and 2015, it is clear that open access still suffers from the effect of embargoes enforced by traditional publishers who maintain that they require that delay to keep the subscription model alive.

“This study pretty much closes the debate on the argument of whether or not open access papers have a greater impact,” says Eric Archambault, President and CEO, 1science. “By examining more than 3 million papers, from very diverse sources of citations and over a sufficiently long time, and considering close to 35 million citations, it is the most robust study on the subject to date.”

The 1science Library OA Solution includes three innovative first-to-market products: oaFindr, a seamless tool to retrieve all open access scholarly papers in every discipline; oaFindr+, an innovative virtual repository software; and oaFigr, independent reports providing OA statistics.

“We have developed an integrated solution for open access to enable academic institutions to analyze their journal subscriptions and provide them with a reliable, precise search and discovery tool to retrieve all open access articles. This solution will also help them comply with governmental open access mandates, and support them in rapidly increasing the diffusion of their institutions’ scholarly production in a manner that is much less labour-intensive,” says Archambault.

The company signed its first contract with the library of Polytechnique Montréal, a university reputed for its initiatives in innovation and technology. “Our partnership is a natural alliance,” says Mathieu Lampron, VP Product, 1science, a Polytechnique Montréal graduate. “The Polytechnique Montréal library and 1science share similar core values of creativity, collaboration and openness. Their involvement has helped us improve our products.”
